How long does the migration process take if the PracticePanther migration team helps

The entire process normally takes 5 to 10 business days, but it can take longer if we are awaiting your feedback on any questions or issues. 

For example, there may be cases where the data that you send us is not good, needs to be heavily cleaned up, or your current software makes it hard to export the data.

We will do our best to help push the import forward as fast as possible, and will request your timely response on any emails.

We recommend assigning one person in your law firm to be in charge of the migration and act as point of contact with your firm's account manager. 

This person will be responsible for exporting your data, and creating any needed custom fields in PracticePanther prior to the import. 


What is the process for migrating data over using your migration team

First, we will ask you to provide us with all the data you would like to import from your previous software. 

We may also ask you to start creating all the custom fields needed inside of PracticePanther to import the data into if they are not standard fields. To quickly learn how to create custom fields, click here.

Our migration team will then match up all of your data to the fields in PracticePanther by rearranging your Excel spreadsheet to match our import template found here

We will then start importing all the records in. We only recommend importing your active clients and cases only to begin using PracticePanther with a clean slate.

Once the import is complete, your account manager will notify you immediately.


What file type does my data need to be in before I import

PracticePanther can only import information via an Excel / CSV file. Every software should be able to export their data to this type of file.

How do I get my data out of my current software

Contact the support person of the previous software that you are coming from. They will know the best methods of exporting their data into an Excel / CSV file.


How do I put my data into your excel import template

If you wish to get the process started yourself, first make sure you have all necessary fields and custom fields in PracticePanther. To learn how to add additional custom fields, click here.

Then, you can click here to download our import template for importing contacts and matters. 

Please do not change anything in the top row. You can then paste all of your data into the matching row and then email it to your account manager so we can import it for you and make sure it goes smoothly. 

What happens when you add a company name in an import

The company name supersedes the contact name so it will be attached to the matter and appear on the invoice.


What kinds of data can I migrate over

You can import almost everything over into PracticePanther including contacts, matters, notes, events, tasks, time entries, expenses and even relationships. 

Sometimes certain data may be exported from your software in a way where we are unable to import. In the event of any delays/errors to an import, our team will update you right away.

When does the import process officially begin

The date your account manager receives your data via email is the date that the import process officially begins. 


Can I do an import myself

Yes, however, keep in mind that you may receive errors while importing which may delay the import process. We strongly suggest that you contact your account manager via email to review your data.


What does the import timeline look like

We will send the spreadsheet you provide over to our migration team.

Your import is now added to our queue and has an estimated import completion time between 5-10 business days. 

Import agenda is as follows:

  1. Your import is added to the import queue.
  2. Your spreadsheet is reviewed by our migration team to determine length of time needed to import and/or potential errors within spreadsheet.
  3. Migration team cleans up spreadsheet and it is sent back to your firm to review before importing.
  4. Migration team imports spreadsheet.
  5. If there are any errors, we will update you along the way.
  6. Once the import is complete, your account manager will notify you right away.


How do I check the status of my import

Your account manager will be in touch with you throughout the import process, but you can always contact your account manager via email to receive a status update.

We import data from Excel, Outlook, Google, Clio (GoClio), MyCase, RocketMatter, CosmoLex, Abacus, Amicus, Actionstep, Lexicata, and many other programs.
